Nottingham couple are in jail in Turkey after allegedly being caught with fake money. Steven and Mandy Bonnington were arrested for possession and attempting to pass on bogus currency. The couple had been on a family holiday at Altinkum, a popular resort on Aegean coast, with their children. They were reportedly arrested within 48 hours of arriving in Turkey on Saturday, and are being held in separate prisons. A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "I can confirm that two British nationals have been arrested in Turkey for possession and the attempted passing on of forged bank notes. The Mail Online reported that the couple's son and daughter, aged 11 and 15, were in the care of friends. It reported that the couple have not been formally charged, but are being investigated by police for possession of about £1,000 in fake £20 notes.

A british couple on holiday in Turkey have been put in prison after allegedly being caught with £1,000 in fake £20 notes. Bakery supervisor Steven Bonnington, and wife Mandy, both 38, were held by police after trying to swap £100 at a bureau de change. Their children Natasha, 15, and Connor, 11, are being cared for by Turkish friends. The Nottingham family were in Altinkum for less than 48 hours before their arrest on Monday.
Steven and Mandy, who insist they are co-operating and have done nothing wrong, are in different jails. Their lawyer Ali Ihsan Aktimur said: "If caught with fake cash in Turkey you must prove you're not guilty. _________________ www.altinkumdidimforum.com www.mydidim.com www.altinkuma.com

Two members of the couple's family have flown to Turkey to look after their children, Natasha, 15, and Connor, 11. Meanwhile, other relatives waited at home for news - they have been unable to contact the pair since they were jailed. The arrests have stunned relatives, friends and work colleagues, who claim the couple are "normal" people incapable of such a scam.
Angela Needham, 42, one of Mrs Bonnington's four sisters, said: "The family know they are 100% innocent. We just want to get the kids home. We want to get all of them home. It's heart-rending. The family said the couple were in Turkey buying items for their new apartment, in time for a holiday in August, when they were arrested.
Mr Bonnington has reportedly been remanded in custody at Soke Prison, about one hour's drive from Altinkum. Mrs Bonnington was in Aydin Women's Prison, about two hours from their apartment. It is reported that the couple had not been formally charged, but were being investigated by police for possession of about £1,000 in fake £20 notes.
